Each year groups of Law Enforcement Officers (local, state, federal, and some international) and Survivors (those of use who have lost a family member in the line of duty) join together to cycle to Washington, DC. The purpose? To pay tribute to those officers who have fallen in the line of duty. This will be my third year riding to Washington, DC I will ride around 700 miles in memory of my brother Jason C. Campbell, Christopher Matthews of Fayetteville NC, Timothy Minor of Charles County MD, and Buddy Christian of Athens GA.
May 5, 2012 I will join up with a team of approximately 25 riders to continue the journey to Washington DC. Some of the FLETC (Federal Law Enforcement Training Center) riders will have started in Baton Rouge, LA to pay tribute to the life of "Angry Rob" Moorhead. I had the honor riding with Rob and he played tribute for my brother at the very site where my brother was killed. These riders will start their trek to Jacksonville, Florida where they will be joined by additional riders and then eventually arrive in Brunswick, GA where the FLETC Ride will "officially" start.
On May 1st the FLETC/LEU (Law Enforcement United) team will make their way from Georgia through South Carolina and North Carolina en route to Virgina Beach, VA where we will join up with a group 300 strong to continue the route to Washington DC for Police Week.
In preparation for my trek to Washington DC I have been cycling a few times a week from my house to Stone Mountain which is about a 30 mile round trip. Last weekend I put Steve McCarter to the test and we rode from Atlanta to Chateau Elan and finally to Athens, GA (85 miles). Sunday we took a shorter (67 miles) route back to Atlanta completing my first long ride of the season (and first long ride for Steve) - and everyone made it home in one piece. About two weeks to go before the ride.
